The Premier and Deputy Minister will also be addressing an event to celebrate IDDP at Sahara Park Newlands Cricket Ground at about 11H30. The event will be preceded by a march of disabled persons starting at 09H00(from Newlands Swimming Pool).
Background:
The IDDP is an annual event which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in October 1992 to promote understanding of disability issues, and to raise awareness on the rights of the disabled persons amongst communities.
The South African government through the Office on the Status of Disabled Persons (OSDP) celebrates this day yearly with satellite events taking place in all provinces. The Western Cape is the host province for this year's commemoration of IDDP.
The OSDP office uses this day to promote the rights of the disabled persons, and to ensure their full participation and integration in all aspects of life.
This year, the OSDP will use this event to celebrate its 10th Anniversary and also to celebrate the ratification and the signing of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.
The theme for this year's celebrations is: "Decent work for Persons with Disabilities"
