Sustainable Atlas of the Western Cape
During 2005 reference was made to a Demographic Atlas that the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (D:EADP) would be producing for the Western Cape in support of Sustainable Development initiatives.

At the time, the project was in its infancy and subsequently many discussions and interviews were held with various stakeholders in order to determine the extent of the final product.

This document, now called the Sustainability Atlas of the Western Cape 2006, has been officially launched by the MEC for Environment, Planning and Economic Development, Ms. Tasneem Essop.

The Sub-Directorate Information Services within D:EADP compiled the hard copy.

The Atlas consists of a set of thematic maps that spatially represent the local municipalities in the Western Cape in terms of the Sustainable Development categories.

These are:

  • Economy
  • Human Settlements
  • Energy and Climate Change
  • Water and Waste
  • Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management

These categories were defined in the Concept Paper on Sustainable Development issued by D:EADP in May 2005.

The Atlas is a visual display of statistics by geographical region, developed as an information tool to assist and guide stakeholders. This Atlas is also available on compact disk (CD) with the maps in image format.

The primary target market for the Atlas is the Western Cape province's Local Municipalities and Government Departments. A research study was conducted to evaluate the priority needs of these stakeholders in terms of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping within the context of sustainability.

An important consideration has been the integration of various existing reports and studies produced for the Department to date.

Data has been integrated from the following strategically important documents to produce the maps:

Further to this, updated data and information have also been sourced from organisations like the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), various government departments and the City of Cape Town as well as private companies.
