Introducing Sustainable Development in the Curriculum

Thousands of learners will soon be taught about Sustainable Development and Climate Change following a groundbreaking course held at the Cape Teaching Institute (CTI).

A five day course, on identifying and implementing environmental opportunities in the new curriculum was attended by 50 educators from a number of schools in the city.

A partnership between various environmental educational NGOs and the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) brought together eight of Cape Town's key environmental service providers in the first collaboration of its kind.

In June the MEC for Environment, Planning and Economic Development Tasneem Essop and Education MEC Cameron Dugmore launched the Western Cape United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, at the first Provincial Sustainable Development Conference in Cape Town.

The Awards Certificate Ceremony on Saturday 22 October, from 09h00 in Kuilsriver is one way of embedding sustainable development principles amongst children and their communities.

MEC Essop will hand-over certificates to the 50 educators at the Cape Teaching Institute in Kuils River. Mr Archie Lewis, Advisor to MEC Dugmore, will be attending on his behalf.

Implementing the course has also strengthened the relationship between environmental education service providers and the WCED.

The WCED introduced the Cape Teaching Institute in September 2002 to provide additional support for in service teacher training. The institute provides in-depth training for groups of up to 50 teachers for between six to eight weeks at a time.

The pilot project was run from 22-26 August and educators are already implementing their practical curriculum-based learning programs in their schools, supported by service providers.
