SOURCE: Public Works (Department of Transport and Public Works, Provincial Government of the Western Cape) Currently 114 classrooms to the value of R20million are being erected at 12 different sites across the Cape Peninsula. "Although we are delivering as fast as we can, the communities do not always understand that the contractors first have to see that all the electrical connections as well as running water and sewage services are in place before the school can be occupied. It also takes time to level and compact school sites before any classrooms may be erected, and as you know we have many sandy areas across the Western Cape," says Bernadine van Schalkwyk, a quantity surveyor at the Department of Transport and Public Works. Public Works will make sure that all new mobile classrooms have covered walkways and flushing ablution facilities. Contractors have been working around the clock to deliver classrooms according to the Public Works tender specifications. Apart from the 12 sites where new classrooms will be erected, two brand new schools consisting of 25 classrooms and supporting infrastructure will soon be completed in Nomzamo and Mfuleni extension 4.![]() Sikhona Msimane says thank you to the Public Works branch of the Provincial Government for providing the new school in Mfuleni.
