The trauma unit is the first in a series of four facilities that will be completed as part of a revitalising project. Soon to follow will be a new training centre, hospital main kitchen, new central sterilising department as well as a renovated 4-storey ward block.
The new trauma unit of 1272 m sq was built over a period of 14 months at a cost of R 7.7 m and will serve the local community as well as more serious trauma cases of the larger Boland Overberg region. The unit comprises of the following facilities:
- Secure entrance with dedicated waiting areas
- Triage area
- Two bed resuscitation area
- Open plan yet dedicated Treatment areas to handle surgical, medical and paediatric patients
- Plaster of Paris room
- Dedicated trauma x-ray facility
- Observation and overnight rooms.
Supporting the new trauma unit is a helicopter-landing pad that is designed and registered to accommodate all helicopter types used during disaster rescues for the transportation of patients to and from the hospital.
The complete hospital will be revitalised including all clinical and supportive physical structure excluding accommodation facilities. The hospital was a 285-bed hospital before the revitalization project started and will be a 315-bed hospital after completion.
