Premier Rasool will address the meeting which he describes as: "a very important step. The legislative institutionalisation of the Premier's Inter-Governmental Forums is still in Bill form at the National Assembly, but the recent service delivery protests have again underlined the urgent need for synergy between spheres of Government and so we are activating our PIF now in the spirit of good inter-governmental relations.
"The alignment and co-operation of Provincial and Local Government is the best response to current service delivery protests. The protests will be discussed at the meeting, but our focus will be on the long term solutions needed to ensure that we are a caring government, responsive to the needs of people.
Key issues will include our capacity to spend effectively, ensuring that our money impacts on the lives of the poorest of the poor, increasingly eliminating wastage and duplication and streamlining processes that may hamper effective and efficient delivery.
"The first PIF follows last week's meeting between the Cabinet and MayCo at which the service delivery protests were also high on the agenda. The PIF will become a regular feature of Government in the Western Cape. It will help expedite development in the Presidential nodes, strengthen Project Consolidate, housing delivery and the universalisation of free basic services."
