Public Works kicked off the process with inspections done at various schools to determine where work needed to commence as soon as possible. Jobs were created for 1,152 people after initial inspections and interviews had been conducted at 240 schools. Training will be given to successful applicants and it is anticipated that maintenance work will run for a twelve-month contract period.
The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works will be the custodian for this programme, in terms of which all provincial property and infrastructure will be maintained. Female-headed households and the youth in particular will be targeted.
Apart from the social upliftment benefits, the programme will see a life-span increase in provincial buildings and high maintenance costs will decrease. Needless to say, the physical appearance of provincial property will also be improved.
