Provincial Events over Reconciliation Weekend

Unveiling of the Nobel Peace Square with statues of our four Nobel Laureates

Date: Friday, 16 December - Reconciliation Day
Venue: V&A Waterfront in front of CD Wherehouse
Time: 10h00
Main speakers: Minister Trevor Manuel, Premier Rasool
Main guests: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Former President FW de Klerk, a representative of former President Nelson Mandela, Dr Albertina Luthuli on behalf of Chief Albert Luthuli's family

Provincial Reconciliation Day Concert

Date: Friday, 16 December
Venue: V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre
Time: 14h00 - 20h00 [Premier and Idols between 18h00 - 19h00] Main artists: Jimmy Dludlu, Brasse vannie Kaap, Robbie Jansen, Winston Mankunku, Sylvia Mdunyelwa, Three Bored White Guys, Pop Idols, Freshlyground, Mama Vox

Provincial Honours Awards to representatives of the slavery era in the Western Cape

Date: Sunday, 18 December
Venue: Moravian mission Church, Genadendal
Time: 10h00
Main speakers: Premier Rasool, Dr Frank Chikane [Presidency] and Prof. Willie Esterhuyse [Freedom Park]
Programme: Church service, Provincial Honours Ceremony and traditional picnic on the Kerkwerf

Please note that descendants of the 14 slaves and sympathisers receiving Provincial Awards will take receipt of these in person. Their life stories will be available. Five Premier's Commendations will be given to institutions promoting the study and awarenes of slavery.

The event takes place in the Moravian Church in Genadendal which became the gathering point for many escaped and later emancipated slaves. The food served at the picnic will come from the era. This event is the focal point of the Province's Slavery Week of Reflection in the context of Freedom Park.
