Social Services for Young People (Youth Focal Units)
DESCRIPTION:
Youth Focal Units are multidisciplinary teams consisting of government employees from a range of fields (e.g. community development, probation and education services) who work closely with non-profit organisations (e.g. YMCA, NICRO and LoveLife) to offer social services specifically targeted to the needs of young people.

Young people who need access to social services such as those listed below are encouraged to register with the Youth Focal Unit nearest to them.

SERVICES OFFERED
If you are registered with the Youth Focal Unit in your area, the unit can help you:

  • Write a CV
Find out what information you should put on your CV, and how a professional CV is presented.
  • Get training
The Department of Social Development enlists various non-government and non-profit organisations to offer young people training, learnerships, internships and mentoring programmes in fields such as basic business, life skills and community development.

In order to get on one of these programmes, however, you need to be registered with the Youth Focal Unit in your area and, ideally, an active member of the Focal Unit's community.

  • Find a job
Youth Focal Units are often asked to help recruit people for jobs that are opening up. If you are registered with the Unit and it knows that you are looking for a job (perhaps you have already asked for help in writing a CV), it will contact you when such opportunities arise.

Young people who have been in trouble with the law and are now struggling to get work are especially encouraged to make contact with the Youth Focal Unit in their area.

  • Take part in your community
Youth Focal Units routinely run programmes and host events that aim to bring together young people in a way that teaches them life skills and empowers them to make constructive life decisions, such as finding a job.

It also does what it can to help young refugees find jobs and integrate with their new communities.

  • Link up with the services you need
Everyone is different, and has different needs. Even though employment and training have been identified as key areas of concern for young people, the Youth Focal Unit in your area will also be able to put you in contact with someone who can help meet your specific needs, for example, if you are in need of trauma counselling or HIV testing.
INSTRUCTIONS:
At the start of 2007 there were Youth Focal Units at 11 of the 16 District Offices of the Department of Social Development. More Youth Focal Units are being established all the time, however, so it is a good idea to call the Social Development District Office nearest to you to find out if they have one.
